Sandspruit & Ullmann Park Conservation Association

Conserving our river and park together

The Sandspruit & Ullmann Park Conservation Association (SUPCA), is a public non-profit voluntary association formed for the sole purpose of engaging in conservation, rehabilitation and protection of the natural riverine environment within the area bound by South Road and Kelvin Drive.

Our commitment

Our objective is to create an environment in which we will be able to enjoy our natural resources to their full in a safe and environmentally friendly river and park system.

Together with the Johannesburg City Council we, the communities who live in the area, will endeavour to maintain and manage the Sandspruit River and the Ernest Ullmann Park area.

  • Cut and maintain the grass to a “lawn” standard along the river and Ullmann Park.
  • Keep the river clean of plastic bags and other rubbish which is flushed down the river.
  • Cut and remove all alien trees, shrubs and undergrowth (in a controlled manner).
  • Trim and keep all the trees and shrubs in a neat and manageable condition.
  • Landscape the river banks to ensure a user friendly environment and reduce erosion.
  • Re-introduce indigenous trees, shrubs and plants.
  • Encourage wild life –birds, small animals and insects to return to the area.
  • Monitor the water condition on a regular basis and report any visible pollution.
  • Establish a recycling program.
  • Put some comfortable seating at various points so that we may sit and enjoy a lovely peaceful surrounding.
  • Introduce patrolling security guards.

By doing the above we will achieve the following:

  • Help in improving the “health of the river” and surrounding areas.
  • Have a very friendly, beautiful river and park to enjoy.
  • Assist the Johannesburg City Council in the upkeep of the river and park
  • Make the area unfriendly to the vagrants and criminals who currently frequent the area as there will be no place to hide.
  • Assist our police and security companies when they patrol the area as they would be able to see all areas.
  • Have a safe place in which to walk, sit or have a picnic, children will be able to play in the park.
  • This will also enhance the property values in the area and make it a sought after area to live in.
  • Create jobs- permanent job opportunities-gardeners and security.

In order to achieve our goals we will be calling on the local community, big business, local businesses, Johannesburg City Council and government to assist us in our funding.
